Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has hit back at claims that Borderlands 4’s new release date was influenced by GTA 6 or Marathon, saying it’s “the result of confidence in the game”

Borderlands 4 has an earlier release date than expected

Ahead of a State of Play event focused on Borderlands 4 later tonight, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford has moved to quell suspicions that the loot-shooter sequel is releasing earlier due to other game release dates. As we covered yesterday, Borderlands is owned by 2K, a Take-Two subsidiary, with the company also planning to roll out GTA 6 at some point in 2025.

That had led to speculation that Borderlands 4’s new release date, which is earlier in September than was originally planned, was to help GTA 6 fit into the calendar year, or in order to avoid competition with Bungie’s Marathon reboot which was also slated to launch on the same day.

Not one to keep quiet, Pitchford has now commented on the release date shit.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Pitchford said “Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates.”

“Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date,” he added.

UK fans can tune into a PlayStation State of Play event tonight to get all of the latest information on Borderlands 4, with dev-guided gameplay and more being shown at 10pm BST.

Yesterday, a post from the Borderlands account on X said “HEYO, VAULT HUNTERS! WE HAVE AN IMPORTANT UPDATE ABOUT THE LAUNCH OF BORDERLANDS 4”

“It has been incredible seeing the response as we move ever closer to the release. Our team has thrown themselves headfirst into making this the greatest Borderlands yet-both for new and returning Vault Hunters.”

“After careful consideration-along with a LOT of meetings, playtesting, and incredible development work-we have made the monumental decision to MOVE UP THE LAUNCH DATE OF BORDERLANDS 4 to SEPTEMBER 12.”

“You’ll be able to crash into Kairos two weeks sooner. We’re BEYOND excited to share the new world with all of you ahead of schedule.”

“And if that still doesn’t feel soon enough? Join us this Wednesday, April 30, at 2pm PT for PlayStation’s State of Play focused solely on Borderlands 4 and get an extended look at the action-packed insanity that awaits you on Kairos.”
