Delays are impacting commutes across Sydney.

Sydneysiders are waking up to cancellations and delays across the rail network as the union kicks off a series of work bans.

After a Christmas and New Year truce, the rail unions have restarted 10 major work bans including a 23km/h reduction in speeds by train crews. The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has also placed a ban on members working with contractors, and another ban prevents work to reinstate train services if they have been cancelled.

On Wednesday morning the delays and cancellations were widespread across the network.

Commuters on the T4 Southern Line faced a 40-minute wait for a train with three consecutive services cancelled. It’s a similar story with services departing from the city on the T4 line, with multiple services cancelled and delays of up to 47 minutes.

Multiple T1 Western Line services were cancelled in the morning and some services were delayed by 25 minutes. At Parramatta, where services usually depart every few minutes, commuters were waiting around 30 minutes for a train.

Multiple cancellations have hit the T3 Liverpool line and the T2 Inner West and Leppington line. Services from the Blue Mountains and the Central Coast.

Sydney Trains CEO Matt Longland said members of the Combined Rail Unions were requested to complete overnight maintenance at Bondi and Homebush, which they said was not provided, resulting in delays. This is causing the majority of the chaos on Wednesday morning.

Work bans at the Rail Operations Centre are also impacting services, and Transport for NSW expects the cancellations and delays to get worse as the week goes on.
